Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology proposed by Abraham Maslow in his paper "A Theory of Human Motivation" in Psychological Review. Maslow subsequently extended the idea to include his observations of humans' innate curiosity. His theories parallel many other theories of human developmental psychology, some of which focus on describing the stages of growth in humans. When kids read the same book, enjoying a common reading experience, peer bonds are built within a generation. When children, parents, and grandparents share classic books, extended familial and community bonds are formed creating a shared frame of reference. Books offer a wide breadth of information, experience, and knowledge.

This extensive list details books for both children and adults that deal with disabilities. The books are sorted by readability and their descriptions include the type of disability addressed. The first Danish children's book was The Child's Mirror by Niels Bredal in , an adaptation of a Courtesy book by the Dutch priest Erasmus.
